SEPANG, January 13, 2004 -- Prosperity and good luck is in the air at the KL International Airport, where foreign passengers are getting a feel of the Chinese New Year, Malaysian style. The fragrance of mandarin oranges that are being given out to passengers, pervades the international atmosphere, whilst red ang pows filled with gold chocolate coins thrill the children who receive them. All this, in the festive spirit of 'Gong Xi Fa Chai' and in conjunction with the KLIA Shopping Campaign themed, Festivals of Malaysia.

The scene at KL International Airport took yet another turn; from a month long celebration dedicated towards Hari Raya Aidilfitri, to a Christmassy atmosphere and now a Chinese New Year theme. Models clad in cheogsam's, are seen walking about the airport, giving away mandarin oranges, as well as ang pow packets filled with gold chocolate coins.

To add to the oriental festival, the making of Chinese delicacy 'Dragon Beard Candy' is being demonstrated to passengers. Dragon Beard candy is a unique Chinese specialty now made by only a handful of candy masters worldwide. A ball of corn-syrup toffee is worked and stretched until it separates into filament-fine threads. The threads are rolled around a nut mixture and served as a melt-in-the-mouth sweet. While the demonstration itself holds foreign passengers in awe, they also get to sample the candy.

And that's not all. Passengers are also entertained by demonstrations of Chinese calligraphy by local calligraphy artists. With a proof of purchase from any KLIA food and beverage or retail outlet, passengers are given the opportunity to have their individual names written in Chinese calligraphy on beautiful pre-printed cards.

"These activities are already attracting a large number of passengers, as they are both engaging and entertaining. Foreigners are thrilled to be able to get a feel of Chinese New Year, whilst learning new arts like the making of Dragon Beard Candy and Chinese calligraphy," said Tuan Syed Ahmad Syed Salim, Head of KLIA Shopping Steering Committee. He added, "These activities add vibrancy and festivity to the airport, in line with our efforts to make KL International Airport the preferred airport to transit."

The KLIA Shopping Campaign themed 'Festivals of Malaysia' is organized to transform KLIA into a shoppers haven for all airport users including travelers from all over the world. Besides month long fun and entertaining activities devoted to the celebration of each festival, there are also contests running to encourage passengers to shop at KLIA. These include the 'Shop, Click and Win' contest, where passengers purchasing a minimum of RM250 will be able to participate in a computer generated game that entitles them to win cash vouchers for brands like Samsonite, The Body Shop, Selberan Jewellery and Bonia. The 'Shop and Unlock the Kelisa' contest where a purchase of RM450 and above gives the passenger a shot at winning a Perudoa Kelisa. Four cars are up for grabs. And 'The Grand Bonanza' contest that requires a purchase of RM500, where passengers upon filling in a slogan, stand the chance to win a brand new TD2000.
