KLIA Passenger Wins Mercedes Benz 'Discover Malaysia' Grand Shopping Bonanza Draw

SEPANG, April 19th 2005 - A passenger traveling through KLIA who took part in the Grand Shopping Bonanza contest is the proud owner of a brand new luxury Mercedes C180 Kompressor. The lucky form was hand picked by YB Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Deputy Minister of Tourism at the Grand Shopping Bonanza Draw, the official closing event for the 'Discover Malaysia' Shopping campaign at KL International Airport. Also present at the event were Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Aris Othman, Chairman, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB).
The 'Grand Shopping Bonanza' contest which ran during the KLIA Shopping 'Discover Malaysia' campaign from 1st November 2004 to 28th February 2005 saw tremendous response from both local and international passengers alike. Over 6000 entries were received, more than doubling last year's number. Participants were challenged to complete the slogan "I like shopping in KLIA because" in no more than 15 words, in the most creative way.
The campaign encouraged travelers to spend more in order to win more. Nearly RM300,000 worth of prizes were received by thousands of both national and international travelers who redeemed their receipts after shopping at KLIA.
The luxury German made car, worth RM256,000 on the road, was sponsored by Mastercard, one of the main partners for the campaign.
Earlier in his speech, YB Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, congratulated the KLIA Shopping Sterring Committee for running yet another successful KLIA Shopping campaign to encourage passengers to shop at KLIA.
He said, "I have watched the KLIA Shopping campaigns move from strength to strength, from its initial launch in 2002 until now. Innovative and interactive campaigns like "Discover Malaysia" lend a sense of enthusiasm and activity to the airport. A campaign like 'Discover Malaysia' which attempts to drive sales and awareness provide a good opportunity for the airport to really prove that it can offer excellent services."
The KLIA Shopping Campaign was created to transform KLIA into a shoppers haven for travelers from all over the world. The recent campaign themed 'Discover Malaysia' offered three contests to passengers, "Shop, Click and Win", "Shop and Unlock the Chest" and "The Mercedes Benz Grand Shopping Bonanza", which guaranteed them instant prizes including Malaysia Airlines tickets. The campaign has also seen a month long fun and entertaining activities leading up to each of the three festivals - Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Christmas and Chinese New Year.
Since the launch of the campaign both passenger traffic and passenger spending has seen record-breaking numbers. In March alone there was an increase of 13% in passenger spending. High fashion items including luxury bags and shoes were one of the top five most popular products being sold along with liquor, perfume and cosmetics and cigarettes.
Tan Sri Datuk Aris Othman, Chairman Malaysia Airports said, "Each year we meet the objectives to turn KLIA into a shoppers' haven and this year we have certainly surpassed them. Firstly, positive feed back from passengers tell us that the atmosphere in the airport was both festive and entertaining, making transit stays more enjoyable."
There was also a surprise draw at the end of the evening as three of the eight gold wafers had not been won by anyone during the campaign for the "Shop and Unlock the Chest" contest.
